Man attacked in Antigua to be flown to Britain

A story from The Associated Press

ST JOHN'S, Antigua: A British man who remains on life support after he was attacked during his honeymoon in Antigua will be flown back home, a police sergeant said Thursday.

Benjamin Mullany will be transferred to a hospital in Britain as soon as an air ambulance is available, Sgt. William Holder said. Mullany, who doctors say is brain dead, has been at Holberton Hospital in the capital of St. John's.

His wife Catherine was shot in the head and killed when the couple was attacked early Sunday inside their cottage at Cocos Hotel, a luxury resort in the island's southwest. Police Commissioner Gary Nelson has said that witnesses reported the couple screamed for help.

No one has been arrested.

"The brutal attack of Dr. Mullany and the brutal attack on her husband are threats to our survival as they directly threaten our main industry, tourism," Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer said late Wednesday.

He announced proposals to curb crime, including random searches, police sweeps through communities to hunt illegal drugs and weapons, increased border patrols and installation of surveillance cameras.

The families of the couple, who were both 31, have issued a statement Wednesday complaining about overly intrusive press coverage. "Some relatives are still being contacted by journalists despite asking to be left in peace," they said.

Catherine Mullany is the 10th person killed so far this year in Antigua. In February, the government brought in a new police commissioner from Canada along with other top officials to modernize the department and fight a recent increase in violence.
