Jonny Wilkinson goes into the
England changing room before the final to find his team mates looking
glum.
“We’re having trouble with our self
belief.
Don’t forget they beat us 36 – 0 in
the first match,” they say.
Wilkinson replies: “Well, the way
I’m feeling, I reckon I can beat them myself.”
So Jonny goes out to play South
Africa on his own and the rest of the team sulk in the
bar.
After a few pints, the game is all
but forgotten. “It must be time now, let’s see how Jonny did.” They put the TV
back on.
“Result: England 7 (Wilkinson 10
minutes) – South Africa 7 (Habana 79 minutes)”.
They rush back to the Stade de
France to congratulate Jonny and prepare for extra time. Wilkinson is sat with
his head in his hands.
“I’ve let you down,” he says.
“Don’t be daft, you got a draw
against South Africa, all by yourself” says Phil Vickery, the
captain.
“No, I haven't,” says Wilkinson, “I got
sent off after 12 minutes”.
