MADRID,
Spain — Real Madrid players are singing the praises of Thierry Henry,
the Arsenal striker whose spectacular solo goal earned his team a 1-0
victory at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in the first leg of a Champions
League knockout match.
"Thierry Henry is playing just
phenomenally at the moment. And with a team like that we're really
going to have to play to counter a score like this in London," Madrid's
David Beckham said.
French international Henry stunned the
nine-time European champion in the 47th minute of Tuesday's game when
he carried the ball past four players before delivering an angled shot
past Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.
Madrid defender Alvaro
Mejia, one of the players Henry beat on his run, said the striker was
"one of the best players in the world." "He ran straight at us.
We tried to stop him by kicking him but he got through with the ball.
He's very strong," Mejia told El Pais on Wednesday. The goal made Arsenal the first English team to win at Madrid's venue and boosted its hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.
"I was able to use my instinct, the goal was a purely instinctive one. I enjoyed myself in this match," Henry said.
